The Effortless Energy of a Blink

Monday, 30 July 2007
Ask ten people how they "flow their energy" throughout the day and you'll get ten different answers.

I've spent years of asking this question because I find it very intriguing to watch the responses people give.

You can immediately distinguish the people who are used to amping their energy to high levels from those who are uninspired and lackluster just by watching the responses in the sleight telltale signs that their body language reveals.

Some people who have not traveled down that road often have virtually no reaction at all. They look like the deer facing headlights. Obviously, they're very unfamiliar in how to create more energy in their body let alone, how to flow it. And, you immediately know why they lack energy and have little ability to create greater strength quickly.

And then some, you'll see an immediate response to your question just in the flickering of their eyelids, the contraction of the muscles around their eyes, the focus of their vision, the sleight changes in creating a more solid body structure, the pursing of the lips.

Yes, even before they answer, you immediately know you're talking to someone who is not only inspired and passionate about how they flow their energy, but who have done it many many times - their energy road is well traveled.

When you watch others who have a casual and almost rehearsed response to what they think their flowing energy should be or what it should look like, you can be sure you won't see a flicker of their eyelids, a brightening of their eyes, etc. - nothing.

When you put emotional content into the mixture of amping up your energy, you change the quality of your energy, the intended trajectory of movement, a more solid body structure, and most importantly for power and speed, greater ability to contract muscles harder and faster.

The Pay Yourself Workout

Friday, 27 July 2007
Yes, pay yourself to work out and stay motivated!

An alarming amount of people these days tell us they don't have time to workout. They struggle with their weight, their low energy levels, and explain that with family and work obligations, they just can't spend the time in the gym like they used to.

I have a solution to these people that I've been using for years. And, after you laugh, I bet you'll find yourself using it no matter whether you're an experience athlete or one of those that "just doesn't have time to workout".

I pay myself to workout. Yeah, you heard it right and I'll explain!

The fact is, no matter how busy anyone every is, we all have time to dramatically change the shape of our bodies, increase our strength and speed - and DON'T need hours to do it.

My method of paying yourself will keep your energy levels up throughout the day and in a very short amount of time, you'll find your strength and speed levels increasing far beyond any expectations you could ever imagine.

Here's what I do. I have ten very special coins that have a very empowering logo and inspiring quote embedded on them - but you can use any kind of coins want. At the beginning of my day, I take all ten coins and stack them in a pile.

The rule is that one by one, each one of the coins throughout your day must move to another location and create a new stack of ten. Each coin represents one set of an exercise. It's amazingly simple and when you actually try it, you'll realize you've just unleashed a powerful motivator that will change your fitness forever.

Does Practice Make Perfect?

Monday, 23 July 2007

You've all heard that  "Practice makes Perfect". But does it
REALLY?

If you're like me, you've probably heard this so often that you
probably don't even question it. For a long time, I never thought
that quicker successes might be found by other means.

So, like a good lemming, I spent long hours at the grindstone
hoping somehow my dedicated hours to rehearsal would have me
leapfrogging from student to master.

But, the more I did it, the more it seemed I was forever doomed
to chasing the carrot with that kind of thinking - always behind,
always just not enough.

Like most, I believed the key to mastery would be given only to
those who worked the hardest and the longest. You've probably
heard the old line..."How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" -
"Practice, practice, practice".

Well that may be true in a sense. I did get better in everything
with more practice. A Lot better over a long time with dogged
determination.

But, there were also years of frustration because doing what
masters do doesn't necessarily bring you to mastery yourself
quicker.

Why? Because you don't truly "own" your actions - and if they
don't fit your body and your way of thinking, then practicing
actions that you don't really own harder and longer quite often
just leads to frustration and muscular tension.

You can't just make clothes fit if they're the wrong size - no
matter how much you want them.

It took me a long time to realize that my teachers were usually
giving me the movements that fit their body, their weight
distribution, their physical talents, and those physical
advantages that usually didn't correspond with mine.

So, in order to leapfrog out of Studentdom the way I wanted to, I
finally came to that I'd have to change my thinking more so than
trying to make someone else's way of moving my own.

From this point, it became one of my biggest goals to learn ways
of thinking that would immediately put me in the drivers' seat of
my actions. This would allow me to "own my movements", so that
physical expressions were original instead of copies of someone
else, so that I would have laser like connection from my brain to
my body, and I could be "in the moment" instead of wondering if I
was doing exactly what I was taught.

You will start leapfrogging instead of plodding along with small
steps when you begin thinking with new ways of thinking that
allow you to master your physical world rather than practicing
relentlessly hoping physical things will one day reveal wisdom
and mastery.

Constant Tuning

Tuesday, 10 July 2007

I will always remember one of my Mother's favorite sayings was "Life is
like a piano - What you get out of it depends on how you play it." This
is very relevant to music, life, and fitness.

In fact, when she passed away many years ago, I found this saying on a
card in her wallet. She was not only a piano teacher but a "life
teacher" as I like to say. Many came to her with bad attitudes, bad
homes, and some of the lousiest parents you can imagine. But, in spite
of that, she was always able to finally get through to her students -
to speak to their hearts and their Inner Giant.

Over the course of years, I saw the bad eggs turn into real gems. I
know, because I saw it happening as I grew up with these children all
around me. They quite often went from hating life, piano lessons,
school, and just about everything - to quite often becoming model
students and extraordinary human beings as adults.

Yes, my Mother was a great teacher, but she also had methods that were
simply applied week after week and year after year - constant tweaking
until she got the child humming at A-440hz (frequency of 440 cycles per
second) which is musician's lingo for - perfect tuning. She was a piano
tuner in a sense as well. She knew that with constant work and care,
she could finally get all the myriad of vibrational frequencies of a
student to finally harmonize, turning chaos into music.

Contrary to what most people think, a piano needs to be tuned every
couple months - if not more. The goal is to keep it in perfect tune -
at A-440hz. One single note can have 3 strings dedicated to it. And, if
you look inside a piano, you'll see it has a LOT of strings, hundreds,
in fact, to tune, with individual pitches that must all vibrate in
perfect unison to create palatable and beautiful music.

Pitch is the perceived fundamental frequency of a sound. Some strings
on a grand piano support 3000 pounds of pressure per square inch.
That's why there's a metal framework inside a piano - to hold that
tremendous amount of pressure. When a string like that snaps, it's
wickedly loud and can scare the daylights out of you.

A tuner is something of a magician who has to make thousands of minute
subtle adjustments that are necessary to put a piano in "perfect tune".
A good tuner will take hours adjusting frequencies with a highly
trained ear (and sometimes computers) - so that when a note is played,
it will vibrate perfectly - in unison with it's mates AND eventually
with the frequencies of all the other strings so that they will create
beautiful music to the ear.

Visceral Gladiator Strength

Saturday, 09 June 2007

Today we're in Rome and have a performance. It's the home of the
Coliseum. Of course, it's the center of what once was the Great
Roman Empire. Somehow it seems like this history is a complete
fantasy and are the sole creations of the make-believe world of
moviemaking.

But from history we all know it was as real as you and I. In fact,
as an entertainer myself, I can't help but thinking that gladiators
were considered entertainment as well. Instead of me hoping to
receive a standing ovation tomorrow night, maybe back then I'd be
hoping that a good performance meant I would live to see another
day!

Every time I train - no matter what it is, I put myself in front of
a crowd, as if it's the real deal. But there's a lot more to it than
just that. Can you imagine being at the center of the Coliseum as a
gladiator hearing the roar of the crowd - 50 thousand strong?

Imagine the rush you'd feel from the adrenaline pumping through your
veins. Imagine the exhilaration. But, you aren't just playing for
the crowd's approval, you're fighting for your life.

You've all heard massive waves of sounds from our modern day sports
events. But now imagine that you are on the arena of old. Imagine
that you are in the Coliseum ready to do battle. To help you get
there, try listening to these words from the movie soundtrack of
Gladiator in "The Slave Who Became a Gladiator".

As the Slave Master speaks to Maximus:

"The Coliseum Spaniard 50 thousand Romans... watching every moment
of your sword willing you to make that killer blow, the silence
before you strike and the noise afterwards. It rises, it rises up
like...like a storm - as if you were the Thunderbird himself."

Maximus: "I will give them something they've never see before."

If you listen to this track, it'll put you in a different time, a
different place. It may even make you feel as if you are there with
Maximus in the middle of the Coliseum ready to fight for your life.

Day of The General

Friday, 01 June 2007

Today we're in Naples, Italy, where it's the night of our show. So we're taking it relatively easy with the sight seeing but thought I'd fill in the scenery a bit before giving you the CoreForce Energy Tip of the day.

We right outside the Castel Nuovo (New Castle) on he Piazza Municipio which was built between 1279 and 1282.

It's surrounded by deep moats and is very imposing to say the least. It was built for Charles 1 of Anjou and rebuilt by Alphosus 1 of Aragon in the 15th century.

Right behind it, is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. This is also the home of one of the greatest tenors of all time, Enrico Caruso. The opera house is opulent with gold and stucco decorations and was built in 1737. It has 184 boxes, 2 galleries, and seating for 3,000 people.

14 miles to the east is the ancient town Pompeii that was buried by the massive eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. It's one of the best preserved specimens of a Roman town.

I couldn't help but think of all the generals and armies that have marched through these same roads.

On a show day where we're performing for thousands of people, you prepare your mind, your body, and all your energy to give you best.

Because it's our job, we think in the terms of energy and how it relates to the body. We prepare ourselves all day to deliver our best performances for people who have come to see us for their evening's entertainment.

Because emotion can be translated as energy, we also must be emotionally present to give our best performance - so we must gage our energies on many different levels - mentally, physically, emotionally, and intellectually so every performance is the best we can offer.

You see, there's no hiding when it's just you up on stage and thousands of eyes are looking at YOU. I love it, but it's quite the responsibility.

3D Thinking

Saturday, 12 May 2007

Do you remember when 3D art was really popular? It's the art that doesn't look like really anything until you stare at it long enough. By relaxing your eyes, you begin seeing that the picture is really 3D art, rather than a bunch of abstract designs. The magic of 3D art starts jumping right before your eyes as long as you know how to focus your eyes.

I struggled for a long time at first to see the 3D in this art. Friends of mine would laugh at me for not being able to see what they saw. Of course, knowing my friends, the first thing I figured was that they'd gotten together to play a practical joke on me. I could just hear their glee, as I'd admit to seeing something that really wasn't there.

I hate feeling stupid just as much as anyone else and wasn't going to let them fool me into thinking that there really was a 3D inside those abstract messes in front of me! No way, I was too clever for that! ha

But, as they continued looking through books of this art long enough, I finally figured maybe they weren't trying to pull the wool over my eyes after all. Their constant goading finally made me take another LONG look at this art and to do what they were telling me to do in the first place.

And behold, just by relaxing my eyes, I found those abstract images starting to pull together almost magnetically. I started to see life stirring from the paper. And then, Wow!, there really was a 3D image jumping right in my face - from just a piece of flat paper and no special glasses. My friends weren't playing a practical joke at all. They had just shown me how to discover some real magic.

It was a cool experience and taught me some lessons for sure.

First, is that something magical can be right in front of us and we don't see it, just because we're afraid to let our guard down to believe that seemingly impossible things like this are right at our fingertips already. Secondly, that on a physical level if we don't relax enough to be able to go with the flow, our bodies can't adjust accordingly to create magic.
